Sunday 1 April

Easter Sunday’s Eaton Hall Charity Garden Open Day has been cancelled after weeks of rain, snow and freezing temperatures have meant that parts of the grounds used as car parking areas have become saturated risking visitors getting stuck.

The event, which was due to be held on Sunday, 1 April, is one of four garden open days each year which in 2017 raised £63,051 for charity.

Rupert Collis, Estate Manager for the Eaton Estate, said: “Cancelling the upcoming Eaton Hall Charity Garden Open Day is not a decision which we have taken lightly and we are sorry for any disruption or disappointment this may have caused.

“Due to the sustained rain and snow fall throughout the winter, the areas which are used for car parking have become saturated making parking vehicles very difficult and would also affect visitors’ enjoyment of the day.

“A lot of resource goes into organising and managing the garden open days from the estate, charity volunteers and professional displays and attractions, often travelling from across the country, meaning it is necessary to make the decision as early as possible.”

It is the first time an open day has been cancelled since 2013 when similar concerns were raised that visitors may get stuck in the waterlogged ground and unable to drive off the site.

The remaining 2018 charity garden open days which are due to take place on Sunday, 27 May, Sunday, 29 July and, Sunday, 26 August, are unaffected by this decision.

“We have explained the decision to The Countess Charity, Countess of Chester Hospital, who were due to host the event and they will be given the opportunity to benefit from another charity garden open day in the future,” added Mr Collis.

“We hope that visitors will join us at one of our future garden open days which raise thousands of pounds for local charities.”
