The Eaton Estate sits astride the River Dee. As the Shropshire Union Canal also runs through the north-east corner of the estate there are a number of interesting bridges to be found crossing these two major waterways.
Of these the most famous is the Iron Bridge, a remarkable example built in 1824 by William Hazledine for the 1st Marquess of Westminster. It is built in cast iron with yellow sandstone abutments forming a single arch with a 50 metre span and has cast iron railings and double gates at the crown of the bridge.
As it is located within Eaton Park, the central, private area of the Grosvenor family’s home, it is not accessible by car except on Open Days or during particular events on the estate. Walkers may cross the bridge, however, by taking the footpath along the western bank of the Dee towards Aldford.
