This year HRH The Prince of Wales visited the Eaton Estate village of Aldford. He laid the corner stone of a new Affordable Housing initiative and met the local people. In the evening there was a ball for the Prince's Trust. For the full story please click here.

Woodland

Woodland

The Eaton estate woodlands cover some 800 acres and are scattered throughout the estate, the woodland being comprised of approximately eighty individual woodland areas. The woodland is predominantly broadleaf in character with a scattering of conifer and non native species running through most of the woodland.

The woodland planting on the estate dates back to the 17th century, however a great deal of the woodlands on the estate where part of the 19th century, woodland planting schemes. Throughout the estate there are examples of ancient trees with most of these falling into the parkland plantings and landscape design areas as well as the field boundaries and hedgerows running throughout the estate.

The woodland forms part of the patchwork of ecological and landscape character of the estate and as such is an important natural resource. It therefore requires careful management taking into account the surrounding landscape, land use and habitats both within and surrounding the woodland.

The commitment to woodland management on the estate is high, this being shown with a woodland cover on the estate of some 7% while Cheshire as a whole has a woodland cover of some 4.5% (2000yr). The woodlands are multi purpose, providing environmental, recreational and landscape benefits as well as providing a sustainable supply of timber both for the estates use and further a field.
