Gilbert le Gros Veneur

Hugh Lupus

The Grosvenor family are distantly related to William the Conqueror.

Although not direct descendants, an ancient ancestor of the Grosvenor family was Hugh D'Avranches. His nephew was Gilbert le Gros Veneur or 'The Chief Huntsman' who was in turn a nephew of William the Conqueror.

This statue of Hugh D'Avranches is found at the Grosvenor family's home, Eaton Hall, on the Eaton Estate. Hugh was first in line of seven Norman Earls of Chester.
